CLEVELAND, OH- The Cleveland State Vikings men's swimming team got off to a dominant start in league meets Saturday afternoon, taking down Green Bay 140-100.
The Vikings seemed in control all day long, winning every event but two, the 1-meter dive and 400 IM.
Head Coach Wally Morton was pleased with the way the team swam.
"I was really pleased with the men's performances," Morton said. "Many of them doubled up with individual events with very little rest and still performed at a very high level."
One of those top performers was senior Berry Thompson, who was able to not only win both the 50 free (21.07) and 100 free (45.67), setting the pool record in the 100 free, he was also on a winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:08.59).
Other top CSU swimmers included Mark de Swardt, who won two events in his first race back after being injured and missing all last season.
De Swardt was able to win both the 500 freestyle (4:42.82) and 1,000 freestyle (9:49.08) for the Vikings.
Junior Al Shillito was another top finisher for the Vikings, clocking in with first place finishes in three separate events, the 200 butterfly (1:53.43), 200 backstroke (1:56.03), and 400 medley relay (3:25.85).
Morton knows that the team will not be able to rest going forward, but was still happy with the result.
"We have a very tough week ahead of us, facing Ohio State and Kenyon" Morton said. "But I thought it was a good, solid conference win and dual meet season opener."
The team will take on Ohio State and Kenyon next Friday, October 26th at Ohio State at 6:00 p.m.
