NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Notre Dame men's soccer team began its five-game homestand with a win as the Irish defeated Cleveland State 2-1 in a non-conference test. The second straight victory improves Notre Dame's record to 3-2-1 on the season.

Notre Dame thoroughly dominated the contest as they outshot they Vikings 17-4 in the game and had a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks. All three scores occurred in the second half as neither team could manage much offense in the first 45 minutes of the game.

Notre Dame first score came on a penalty kick by Griffin Howard (San Diego, Calif.) eight minutes into the second half after freshman Chad Riley (Houston, Texas) was fouled in the penalty box. It marked the third goal scored on a penalty kick by the Irish this season. Notre Dame is a perfect three-for-three in penalty kick attempts and all three have been made by Howard who leads the team in scoring with three goals.

Following Howard's score, the Irish struck one minute and 28 seconds later with rookie Justin Detter (White Lake, Mich.) first collegiate off an assist from Riley. Riley flicked the ball to Detter 25 yards out and Detter blasted a shot from just outside the box into the corner of the past Viking goalkeeper James Kryger.

Cleveland State got on the scoreboard on John Schaller's goal off a free kick from Adam Campellone. With loss, the Vikings fall to 1-4-1 on the season.
