Vikings, Broncos Battle To 1-1 Draw

Seot. 1, 2000

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State (0-0-1) and Western Michigan (0-0-1) battled to a 1-1 tie in the season-opener for both schools. The 120-minute battle marked the third consecutive season the schools have squared off to start the year.

The Vikings took an early 1-0 lead when Atle Haaland was taken down in the penalty box just 16:46 into the game. Haaland converted the ensuing penalty kick to put CSU ahead.

The score remained the same until the 85:49 mark, when Ryan March collected a Bronco goal kick and beat CSU goalie Josip Novkovic to knot the score at 1-1.

Despite a red card at the 86:56 mark against Western Michigan's Scott Duhl that forced the Broncos to play a man down, neither team was able to put the ball in the net in either of the two 15 minute overtimes.

WMU out-shot CSU 19-17 and took more corner kicks (6-1), while the Vikings recorded more fouls (24-19).

The late goal by the Broncos denied new CSU head coach Pete Curtis a win in his debut.

The Vikings are in action again when they welcome Michigan to Krenzler Field Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
