Joachim Walker Earns Spot On Verizon Academic All-America Second Team

Nov. 20, 2002

CLEVELAND - Cleveland State senior Joachim Walker (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) is a member of the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Men's Soccer University Division Second Team released Wednesday afternoon. Only three other Viking student-athletes have been recognized in the 50 years since the program's inception: Pat Lyons (men's basketball, 1973), Jennifer Webber (fencing, 1992) and Amy Jauert (softball, 1997). The teams are selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Walker, a liberal studies major with a 3.74 GPA, posted 21 points during the 2002 season, including a team-high nine assists. He scored the game-winning goal in CSU's 2-1 Horizon League quarterfinal victory over UW-Green Bay and tied a conference single-game tournament record with three assists to help the Vikings defeat Illinois-Chicago 5-3 in the league semifinals. For his efforts, Walker earned a spot on the Horizon League All-Tournament team.

Cleveland State's (10-11-0/5-2 HL) most successful soccer season in over a decade came to a close last Sunday with a loss at No. 8 UW-Milwaukee -- the school's first appearance in a league championship match. The last Viking team to post double-digit wins was the 1990 squad that finished 12-6-2.
