It's a Great Time to Be a Viking!

Oct. 25, 2010

It's a great time to be a Viking.

The page of my calendar has almost turned to November. The leaves are changing colors. The fall sports are entering postseason play, while the winter teams are showing promise of being special.

The women's soccer team is not only going to be playing in a Horizon League Championship match, they will be serving as the host team for a first round contest. They just completed the best regular season in program history, and have a legitimate chance to win the conference postseason tournament.

The men's soccer team will also be playing in the postseason, having secured their bid last Saturday with a 2-1 win over Wright State. Right now the Vikings sit in third place on the conference standings, and could finish the season anywhere from second to sixth.

Volleyball is playing well, as usual, and our tennis teams are also wrapping up their fall seasons with strong performances.

The swimming and diving teams are currently undefeated, with the women already owning a 3-0 mark in the Horizon League. That includes a win last Saturday against five-time defending conference champion Green Bay, marking a huge step for the women's program here at CSU. On top of all that, head coach Wally Morton joined the 300-win club, posting the 300th and 301st coaching victories of his career with the Vikings' wins over Green Bay.

And of course basketball season is almost upon us, with both the men's and women's teams looking strong this preseason.

With all of our teams looking so good, it's a great time to show your Viking pride and support our athletic programs. This week, two of our teams will be playing their biggest games of the season, and your presence at those games can make all the difference.

Krenzler Field will be the site for both of these huge contests. On Saturday, at 2:00 p.m., the men's soccer team will be playing Akron, the No. 1 team in the country. It will be the first time in school history that the men have hosted the nation's top team, and you just know the atmosphere is going to be electric. If you've never seen a CSU soccer game, this would be a great match-up to make your first.

The Vikings will enter the game relaxed and loose. Head coach Ali Kazemaini knows his team has nothing to lose, while Akron has the pressure of maintaining their undefeated season and No. 1 ranking. Coach Kaz expects his team will go out and play well. This is the best team in the country, and CSU has a shot at becoming the first team all year to dethrone them. How can you pass the opportunity to possibly witness the greatest victory in school history?

The women's soccer team will be playing in a big game of their own the very next day. The Vikings will be hosting a Horizon League tournament game for the first time in program history, playing Detroit on Sunday at noon.

Both matches will provide excellent chances for you to come down to Krenzler, get loud, get wild, and show your Viking pride.

With all our teams playing so well, it is a great time to be a Vikings. I can't wait for this weekend, and I can't wait to experience what will definitely be amazing games, and I can't wait to see you all at Krenzler!
