CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to sixth-seeded Loyola in the quarterfinal round of the Horizon League Championship on Tuesday (Nov. 8) night.

The Vikings end the 2011 campaign with a 9-9-1 overall record. Loyola improved to 6-11-1 overall and advanced to the semifinals where they will take on Valparaiso at 8:00 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 11) night.

Loyola scored the only goal of the match in the 33rd minute off a header from Reed Patterson. The Ramblers had a throw in deep in Viking territory and James Howe and Kyle Spoo touched it before Patterson converted.

The Vikings had opportunities, they just didn't convert. CSU goalkeeper Brad Stuver kept his club in the match, but the offense never could get on the board.

Early in the first half, a Jordan Hart shot clanked off the crossbar.

Late in the second half, an Al James attempt missed just wide to the left. CSU threatened late in the second half when Loyola goalkeeper Peter McKeown left the goal unattended. A ball was loose in front of the net, but the Loyola backline bailed out their goalie and preserved the 1-0 lead.

Cleveland State took eight shots while Loyola attempted just six. The Ramblers, however, put four shots on goal and Cleveland State had just two on target in the match. The second Viking shot on goal came with 17 seconds remaining in the contest.

With the win, the Ramblers have won three straight matches and will take their streak on the road to battle Horizon League regular season champion Valparaiso. The Crusaders beat the Ramblers 1-0 back on Oct. 26, the last match Loyola lost.
