Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 To Detroit In Horizon League Quarterfinals

Nov. 8, 2003

DETROIT, Mich. - A penalty kick from Detroit's George Kithas with 3:47 remaining in the match ended the season for the Cleveland State men's soccer team in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship Saturday in Detroit. The Vikings held the Titans scoreless until a controversial call resulted in the game-winning penalty kick.

"I thought our guys played with a lot of character under some very extreme conditions," head coach Pete Curtis said. "It's a shame the game had to end the way that it did with such a controversial call. We need to be able to overcome adversity and not put ourselves in a position to have a game decided by the officials."

Cleveland State (6-13-1) managed just four shots on the day, compared to 18 for the Titans. Detroit held Stephen Ademolu, the Horizon League Player of the Year, without a shot on the match. Ten cautions were issued in the match that saw just 29 fouls.

Detroit (8-8-2) advances to the semifinals of the Horizon League Championships, where it will face the winner of Sunday's Loyola/Butler match.
