Men's Soccer Loses Defensive Struggle in Horizon League Closer

Valparaiso, Ind. The Vikings played to a scoreless tie in the first half on Friday (Nov. 2), but a header by Valparaiso into the net just seven minutes into the second half proved to be the difference as Cleveland State fell to Valparaiso 1-0.

Valparaiso improves to 4-10-3, 2-4-2 HL, while the Vikings fall to 3-13-2, 0-7-1 HL.

Valparaiso ended the scoreless tie just seven minutes into the second half as Adrian Ortiz made a nice cross to Oscar Lomeli who headed the ball into the net for his second goal of the season.

CSU had two good scoring opportunities in the first half within five minutes of each other. George Kephart had a shot inside the box at the 8:09 mark but goalkeeper Ryan Schwarz made a nice save to negate the opportunity.

The Vikings second chance came at the 13:54 mark as defender Marco DiFranco had a shot on goal from just inside the box, but Goalkeeper Ryan Schwartz made his second and final save of the game.

CSU was out-shot 15-7, including 5-2 differential in shots on goal.

The Vikings offsides trap was once again affective as it drew the Crusaders offsides six times on the afternoon.

The Horizon League Tournament is next up for the Vikings as the number 9 seed as they will either travel to either Butler or Green Bay who will be the fourth seed on Friday (Nov. 9).

"We're looking forward to the Horizon League Tournament," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "It will be a good challenge and test for the players."
