CLEVELAND, Ohio - Two goals from Aaron Adkins helped Cleveland State defeat Canisius, 2-1, in the non-league finale for both teams on Sunday (Oct. 30) afternoon at Krenzler Field.

With his two goals, Adkins increased his season total to nine, tying him with UIC's Ivan Stanisavljevic for the most in the Horizon League.

Cleveland State will enter the regular season finale against Detroit on Friday (Nov. 4) with an overall record of 8-8-1 and 4-2-1 in league play. Canisius finishes the regular season at 4-13-1.

Adkins opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he took a ball from freshman Mike Derezic and cut left around Canisius goalkeeper Kareem Gray who was charging at him. The junior forward easily slid it into the goal for his eighth tally of the season.

Denver Spearmen knotted the match at 1-1 with his goal first goal of the season in the 55th minute.

The second goal from Adkins - his team-best fourth game-winner of the season - came in the 67th minute. Manuel Conde played a ball from the midfield stripe and Adkins caught up with it just outside the top right corner of the box. He knocked it just inside the far left post to give the Vikings the 2-1 lead that they clung to.

Junior goalkeeper Brad Stuver made one save to earn his eighth victory of the season. The Vikings also received a crucial save from defender Justin Mancine. After Stuver came out to chase a ball, Canisius gained possession and launched a shot from just inside midfield. Mancine retreated and cleared the ball, allowing CSU to retain its 1-0 lead.

The Vikings won the shot battle, firing 14 shots while Canisius managed six - five of which came in the second half.

Cleveland State will close out the regular season on Friday (Nov. 4) night when Detroit visits Krenzler Field for a match scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. The Horizon League Championships will begin a week from Tuesday, November 8th.
