FT. WAYNE, Ind. - Freshman Andrew Gutting , one of 11 freshmen starting for Cleveland State, scored the equalizer in the 88th minute and CSU and IPFW battled throughout two scoreless overtime periods to tie, 2-2, on Wednesday (Oct. 11) night at IPFW. The tie, CSU's second of the season, moves the Vikings to 4-8-2. IPFW is now 1-12-1.

The speedy Gutting, scoring for the second time this season and first since Aug. 25, took a pass from sophomore Nenad Stojkovic on the right sideline 30 yards out, beat his man and found the back of the net.

"It was certainly a good finish," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "He beat his man and made a play, and that was exactly what we needed."

Senior David Stewart scored at the 17:43 mark to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. IPFW was attempting to clear the ball when Stewart stole a pass from a Mastodon defender and rocketed a shot off IPFW goalie Michael Knitter's hand and into the net.

After intermission, the Mastodons stormed back, as IPFW's Mitchell Haifley scored off a free kick to tie the match in the 56th minute and then Chas Parry fired a shot past CSU goalie Dan Duric on the tail end of a corner kick at the 61:37 mark to give IPFW the lead.

"We played sloppy defense and times, and their goals came from that," Kazemaini said. "The conditions weren't ideal and I think the ball may have been a bit too wet for our keeper to handle, but that's a play our defense should make."

CSU posted its highest shots total of the year, outshooting the Mastodons, 24-20, while IPFW had a slight 10-9 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks (6-6) and fouls (13-13) were even.

Stewart and freshman Bryan Henson each had six shots and a trio of Vikings had three. Parry had a game-high nine shots to lead IPFW, including five on goal.

Duric played the first 69:25 of the match, recording four saves and allowing both IPFW tallies. Sophomore Kasey Gray, the Vikings' usual starter in goal, played 40:35 and notched three saves. Michael Knitter played all 110 minutes in goal for IPFW and stopped seven shots.

"Tonight showed us we have a lot to work on before we play these last few matches," Kazemaini said. "There were some things we didn't do well at all and we need to get straightened out on the defensive end."

The Vikings are back in action on Sunday (Oct. 15) at defending league champion UW-Milwaukee, the last of a string of six straight road matches. Kickoff is slated for noon.
