Men' Soccer Drops Road Contest To Duquesne, 3-0

Final Stats

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Cleveland State men's soccer team managed only five shost and just one on goal in its 3-0 loss to Duquesne on Thursday Night at Rooney Athletic Field. The loss drops CSU to 0-6-1 as it wrapped up a three-match road swing. The seven-match winless streak to begin 2005 is the longest in the history of the Cleveland State men's soccer program.

The Vikings and Dukes played a scoreless first 30 minutes of the match, but Scott Gibson scored one of his two first-half goals on a penalty shot in the 32nd minute to give the Dukes the lead. Steve Mellor added a goal in the second half for the 3-0 advantage.

"We had a stretch of the game where we made those same mistakes we have made all season," head coach Pete Curtis said. "We played well at points, but we're still not putting the finishing touches to get goals."

Freshman Anthony DeMarco recorded double-digit saves for the second straight game, this time establishing a new career-high with 11. Zach Varga made one save for Duquesne (5-1).

The Vikings were outshot 14-2 in the first half and 11-3 after the break. Junior Ismail Ismail led the team with two shots.

"It is tough to win when you get outshot like we did tonight," Curtis said. "We are going to use this weekend off to regroup and get ready for the bulk of conference play."

CSU will try and get back on track as it makes its first extended trip home. The Vikings will play four of their next five games at Krenzler Field and six of their final 10.

The Vikings are off until next Thursday when they return home to face defending Horizon League champion UW-Milwaukee. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.
