CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Head coach Ali Kazemaini's Viking debut was a success as Cleveland State fought off rainy weather to defeat Gannon in an exhibition match, 1-0, Saturday at Krenzler Field.

The match's only goal came at the 20:57 mark when Anthony Segreti took a nice cross from freshman George Kephart on the left side and fired the ball past Gannon netminder Matthew Ruston. Segreti had just checked into the match for the first time when the goal occurred.

"We have a lot of good players and we will need to rely on different players stepping up in many different situations," Kazemaini said.

Kazemaini was also pleased with the Vikings' overall effort, especially with the play of freshman midfielder Josh Williams, who tallied his first shot as a Viking.

"Josh Williams was a nice surprise for us today," Kazemaini said. "What he did was great."

Nine freshmen saw action for the Vikings, including five starters.

"We are very young," Kazemaini said. "We have to keep teaching and see how we do. We have some nice players, but we need to keep getting better."

Three Vikings tied for team-high honors in shots, as Segreti, junior David Stewart and freshman Marco DiFranco all posted two shots. Both of Segreti's shot were on goal.

Sophomore Kasey Gray got the start in goal for the Vikings, recording five saves in 45 minutes of action. Freshman Dan Duric recorded three saves and played the entire second period.

Cleveland State will make its regular season debut at home on Friday, Aug. 25 when Robert Morris comes to Krenzler Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
