Andy Carl begins his eighth season as an assistant coach for Cleveland State -- his sixth season under Pete Curtis after serving under Brian Doyle for two years.

Carl, a former Viking goalkeeper, coaches Cleveland State's keepers.

Since beginning his work with Cleveland State, Viking goalkeepers have steadily improved. The team went from a goal against average of 2.61 in 1999, his second season, to 2.04 just two years later. Last season, the Cleveland State net minders held opponents to a strong 1.74 GAA, the team's first average below 2.00 since 1997 -- Carl's senior season.

The Rochester, N.Y., native and graduate of Greece Arcadia High School transferred to CSU before to the 1996 season after two years at Bowling Green. Carl immediately took over the netminding duties for the Vikings, starting 18 games in 1996 and finishing fourth in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference with a sparkling 1.22 goals against average. Selected a member of the MCC All-Newcomer Team, Carl finished the year with 83 saves and five shutouts.

The senior captain's final year was also solid. Carl started 14 games and appeared in 16, recording 71 saves, three shutouts and a 1.35 GAA. In addition to his strong play in the net, he was also solid in the classroom, earning the CSU Athletic Academic Excellence Award in 1997. For his career, Carl ranks seventh in school history with eight shutouts and seventh in saves with 154.

Carl completed his coursework and earned his bachelor of science in biology in the spring of 1999. On Nov. 2, 2002, Carl married Emily Burvis, who was a four-year letterwinner on the CSU volleyball team. The couple resides in Olmsted Falls.
