Cleveland State Men's Soccer Comes up Short at Detroit, 3-2

DETROIT, Mich. – Cleveland State (1-5-1, 0-2-0) dropped their second straight game to open league play after falling to Detroit (1-6-0, 1-1-0) on Saturday evening by a score of 3-2.

Detroit wasted no time getting on the board as Drew Pierso fired a shot into the lower right corner just a minute into the contest.

The Vikings drew even in the sixth minute when William Wagner finished off a through ball from Marko Rimac. The Titans reclaimed the advantage in the 14th minute as Guershom Sylvain headed in a cross from Josh Copeland off a pass from Diego Zermeno.

Cleveland State again tied the game in the 33rd minute when Pablo Kawecki fired home a shot off a give-and-go from M. Rimac and Julian Pellegrini. Five minutes later, the home team jumped back ahead as a failed clearance off a 40-yard free kick led to Casey McCarthy scoring to lead 3-2.

The game went into the half with Detroit leading 3-2 and holding an 8-7 edge in shots.

Neither team could break through in the second half, as the Titans handed the Green and White their second straight league loss.

Cleveland State held a 13-12 edge in shots during the game, while both teams had six corner kicks.

M. Rimac and Kawecki finished with three shots apiece. Stephen Yerian made three saves on the evening.

The Vikings will have a week off before welcoming Green Bay to Krenzler Field on Saturday, Sept. 23 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
