Cleveland State Men's Soccer Draws With Loyola in Home Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings (1-1-1) endured a tough 2-2 draw to Loyola (1-0-1) in their home opener on Friday evening. Prior to the game, Cleveland State unveiled its 2022 Horizon League Regular Season and Tournament Championship banner.

The only goal of the first half came in the 16th minute, as Bojan Kolevski volleyed in a cross from Carlos Portas to give the Green and White a 1-0 advantage.

Cleveland State doubled its lead in the 62nd minute after Marko Rimac finished off an excellent through ball from Daniel Tregansin.

Loyola broke through in the 68th minute when Marc Torrellas followed through on his initial shot that was saved to get within 2-1.

With the clock ticking away, the Vikings were called for a foul with four seconds remaining in regulation, setting up a Ramblers free kick from 25 yards out. The visitors sent everyone into the box as Quinten Blair played a perfect ball that was headed in by Markus Maurer as time expired, ending the contest in a 2-2 draw.

Loyola held a commanding 20-5 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Ryan Poling made the start in goal, logging 33 minutes to go along with a save. Stephen Yerian was strong in his collegiate debut, making six saves.

Cleveland State heads back out on the road Monday, Sept. 4 at Xavier with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
