Cleveland State Men's Soccer Advances to #HLMSOC Championship With 4-2 Win Over Oakland

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State (10-3-5) advanced to their second straight Horizon League Championship after defeating Oakland (4-10-5) in the semifinals 4-2 on Krenzler Field.

The Vikings will look to win their second Horizon League Championship with their first coming in 2012.

THE GAME
The Vikings grabbed the first lead of the game in the sixth minute as Albert Portas scored off a centering ball from Pablo Kawecki.

Oakland evened the contest in the 18th minute as Gabriel Baylon took advantage of a bad clearance for a goal. The Golden Grizzlies climbed on top in the 41st minute as Charlie Retzer finished off a ball over the top from Baylon.

Cleveland State went into the half trailing 2-1 despite holding a 10-3 edge in shots.

Kawecki knotted the game in the 57th minute with a one-touch finish to the near post off a cross from Jannis Schmidt.

In the 72nd minute, Bojan Kolevski put the Green and White back on top with a header off a ball over the top from Hector Gomez. Six minutes later, the duo connected again as Gomez played a through ball, and Kolevski one-touched it in to lead 4-2.

The Vikings held a 19-8 edge shots and a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Cleveland State took four corners compared to one for Oakland.

Kolevski led the way in shots with six as five of those were on target. Portas and Kawecki each fired off four shots with two on target apiece.

Omeed Naeemy completed the game with two saves in goal.

UP NEXT
Cleveland State will face the winner of Wright State/IUPUI in the Horizon League Championship game on Saturday, November 12 at 1 p.m. on Krenzler Field.
