Schmidt Scores Twice to Propel Cleveland State Past UIC, 2-1

CHICAGO, Ill. – Cleveland State (2-0-0) came from behind to defeat UIC (0-2-0) 2-1 on Monday evening in a non-conference game. Jannis Schmidt, recently named Horizon League Player of the Week, scored both goals for the Vikings.

THE GAME
The Vikings had the first scoring chance in the 20th minute as Bojan Kolevski was on a breakaway off a through ball from Pablo Kawecki but his empty net shot was cleared off the line by the defense.

UIC jumped in front in the 23rd minute when Eduardo Garcia crossed the ball to the far side of the box and Andres Lemus centered it to Brian Perez for the goal.

The Flames took the 1-0 lead into the half despite the Green and White holding an 8-4 edge in shots.

Cleveland State nearly equalized in the 51st minute but Albert Portas shot from the middle of the box was tipped over the crossbar.

Schmidt tied the game in the 74th minute with a bicycle kick off a perfect cross from Nick McCausland. Nine minutes later, the senior won the game as he dribbled past the defense and ripped a shot into the back of the net as the Viking came from behind to stun the Flames, 2-1.

The Vikings held a 17-12 edge in shots with eight of those shots on frame. Max Kasputis picked up his second win in goal after making two saves.

Portas fired off a game-best six shots with two on frame. Schmidt was close behind with five shots and three on target.
