Cleveland State Men's Soccer Topples Milwaukee on the Road, 3-1

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The Vikings moved to 3-0 in Horizon League play with a 3-1 victory at Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon. Cleveland State is now the lone unbeaten team in the Horizon and will turn their focus to IUPUI at home on Wednesday.

THE GAME
The opening half went scoreless with Milwaukee holding an 8-6 advantage on shots, but Cleveland State owned a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Julian Pellegrini nearly had the first tally in the 33rd minute when his shot went off the right post.

Pablo Kawecki opened the scoring in the 51st minute off a pass from Stjepan Mijic-Barisic, putting the Green and White on top, 1-0.

Albert Portas doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute, scoring off an initial save on Jannis Schmidt's shot. Two minutes later, the Vikings were called for a penalty in the box, awarding Milwaukee a penalty kick. Raul Medina converted the opportunity to trail 2-1.

Schmidt capped off the third Horizon League win with a goal in the 87th minute off a feed from Michael Neumann.

The teams combined for 33 shots in the contest with Cleveland State holding an 18-15 edge. The Vikings put 11 of those shots on target, compared to the Panthers six. Each team had six corner kicks in the contest.

Schmidt led the offense with a goal and an assist. Pellegrini finished with a game-best four shots. Omeed Naeemy made four saves for the Vikings.

UP NEXT
Cleveland State welcomes IUPUI to Krenzler Field on Wed. Sept. 29 for a 7 p.m. Horizon League contest. The Vikings are 2-3-2 all-time against the Jaguars.
