MATCH RECAP 

The Cleveland State University men's soccer posted its second straight win as the Vikings held on for a 1-0 victory over Milwaukee Saturday evening at a humid Krenzler Field.

Senior Lawrence Karpeh scored late in the first half for the Vikings and the hosts held on for their second league win. The tally was the second of the season for Karpeh and the 10th of his career.

True freshman Omeed Naeemy kept the clean sheet in net, his second of the campaign, by making a season-high seven saves.

Head coach Sinisa Ubiparipovic put forth the same starting XI that took the field in last weekend's 2-1 win over Northern Kentucky.

Cleveland State had the first few looks at goal inside the first 10 minutes. CSU's best chance in the early going came when sophomore Jannis Schmidt played the ball back into the box after a partial clearance from a corner. Senior Gabriel Pewu had a header from point-blank range knocked away by the Panther keeper.

As the first half wore on, Milwaukee did begin to produce some chances. In the 20th minute, Naeemy knocked away a sliding shot from near the penalty spot as a Panther had been played in on goal. He also got down to his right to make a diving save in the 33rd minute, knocking it out of play.

The lone goal of the match came in the 41st minute due to great individual work by Karpeh. He received the ball about 10 yards over midfield before driving down the right flank. He then cut the ball back to the middle of the field before unleashing a low blast from about 25 yards out that slipped inside the far post.

Milwaukee kept the pressure on in the second half, coming at the Vikings in waves, but CSU did not break.

The Panthers had a free kick just outside the box in the 50th minute that was hit over the bar. About six minutes later, senior Hayden Parente came up with a huge intervention, blocking a potential goal on a shot taken from six yards out in front.

The Vikings came closest to adding an insurance goal when Andrew Nicholas left the ball for Schmidt at the top of the box before Schmidt pushed it to the right into the run of Karpeh. However, Karpeh's shot was blocked out for a corner.

Milwaukee had a blast from distance go slightly over the bar in the 73rd minute.

The Panthers' final chance to tie came in the 88th minute. After the ball bounced around on a corner, a Panther blasted a shot through traffic from the top of the box. Naeemy made a lunging stab to knock the shot down before sophomore Ryan Kolonick cleared it away.

The shutout moved kept the Vikings perfect in three matches at home this season.

Cleveland State will open next month with a three-game road trip that begins at Green Bay Saturday, Oct. 5.
