Week #6

THE OPENING KICK:
• Cleveland State's final match of the month will see it host defending HL champion UIC before it opens a three-game road swing at Duquesne.
• CSU is 23-17-4 all-time against the Flames. Its 23 wins against UIC are its most against any opponent in program history.
• CSU and UIC have played at least once every season since 1983, tied for the longest active streak the Vikings have with an opponent.
• The Vikings are 6-3-1 in the last 10 meetings with the Flames.
• CSU is 5-5-1 all-time against Duquesne, with this being the fifth time in seven seasons that the teams have met.
• The Vikings are 3-1 against the Dukes in the past decade but lost last time out. CSU has won each of its past two contests at Duquesne.

LAST TIME OUT:
Gabriel Pewu's second career brace lifted Cleveland State to a 2-0 triumph over Bowling Green to begin the week, CSU's first win of the season.
• The return to HL play did not go as well as the Vikings dropped a 4-1 decision at nationally ranked Wright State.
Ben Hryszko scored his first collegiate goal against the Raiders.

FREE KICKS:
• Cleveland State was tabbed fifth in the Horizon League preseason poll.
• While it took the fifth seed in 2017, CSU has been seeded fourth or better in the Horizon League Tournament in eight of the past 10 seasons, the highest figure in the League in this span.
Vlad Jandric and Noah Pio were both selected All-Horizon League Second Team in 2017. Thomas M'Barek was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Noah Pio has a point in 10 of the past 19 matches, scoring in five of them. Pio was among the top 10 in points, goals and assists in HL play in 2017.
• Pio's goal vs. Green Bay was the first time a Viking free-kick taker scored since the opening weekend of the 2016 season (excluding penalty kicks).
• Cleveland State has outshot its opponent in six of its first seven matches, including all three Horizon League fixtures.
• The Vikings are the only team to outshoot their opponent in every League match of the season.
Noah Pio has scored or assisted on nine of CSU's last 10 goals in Horizon League matches.
• Among the 35 starts made by Vikings on defense or in goal this season: 17 starts have been made by true freshman or redshirt freshman, 17 starts have been made by sophomores with one start being made by a senior.
Gabriel Pewu's goal at Milwaukee was his first-career tally in HL play.
• All eight true freshmen that were healthy played on the season's opening weekend. Two more redshirt freshmen also made their collegiate debuts.
• Six CSU rookies have started at least once while freshmen Jannis Schmidt owns a team-high five starts among freshmen.
• Thirty five of Cleveland State's last 47 goals have come in the second half. In fact, 12 of those goals have taken place in the 77th minute or later.
• The Vikings got a result at Milwaukee Sept. 15 despite trailing in the match. This is the 13th consecutive season in which CSU has come from behind to earn a result at least once and the eighth straight season it has achieved the feat on the road. The Vikings have now pulled off the achievement in a road League match four times in the past five seasons.
Stephen Milhoan became the 19th Viking to start a match this season when he started against Bowling Green.
Noah Pio has assisted on all three of Gabriel Pewu's goals this season.
Vlad Jandric, Thomas M'Barek and Noah Pio are the three Vikings to start every match thus far in 2018. Jandric owns 17 consecutive starts, the most among active Vikings.

UP NEXT:
• Cleveland State will use the bye week in its League schedule to play a pair of Power Five opponents on the road, visiting Ohio State October 5 and Pittsburgh Oct. 8.
