Another Shutout, OT Goal Lift Vikings Over Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin - Hesham Hammouda's goal just 2:45 into the first overtime period lifted the Cleveland State men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Green Bay on Saturday night.

The win gives the Vikings further leverage in the Horizon League standings and improves their record to 7-7-2 (3-3-2) and drops the Phoenix to 5-9-3 (2-4-2). The two teams came into tonight's game in a three-way tie for the final spot in the Horizon League tournament.

The first half was a foreshadow of the final result. Though neither team was able to find a goal in the period, the Vikings led shots six to zero. Hammouda, Victor Zamora, Gianluca DiFranco, and Kareem Banton each had a shot apiece while Kevin Blackwood added two.

In the second half, the Phoenix gave the Vikings a run but again, neither team was able to break through the goal and the game headed to overtime.

After a shot from Jake Lagania was saved by the Phoenix' keeper, Hammouda headed the saved shot and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Lagania was credited with the assist, bumping his total points to 14 on the year.

The Viking defense of Manesio, Banton, Mustafa Raychouni, James Milli and Nick Kane was again as stellar as can be, holding the opposition to a shutout for the fourth time in the last five games.

Aleksandar Drobac improved to 5-3-2 in goal on the year. He was not forced to make any saves as the Phoenix did not record a shot on goal.

CSU finished the game leading shots, 14-7.

The Vikings will finish the regular season at UIC next Friday (Nov. 6) at 8:00 p.m. EST. The Flames have already clinched the Horizon League regular season championship and first seed in the tournament while the Vikings will look to secure a spot in the final six.
