Vikings Win Second Straight; Beat Pitt 1-0

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Cleveland State men's soccer team won its second straight game on Tuesday night, defeating Pittsburgh 1-0 in a non-conference match.

The Vikings improved to 5-6-1 overall (1-3-1 Horizon) and the Panthers dropped to 5-5-3.

Looking to gain momentum into the final stretch of the season, CSU was able to head into the halftime break in a scoreless draw with Pitt despite totaling just one shot and one opporunity from the corner.

Aleksandar Drobac made two saves in the first half.

In the second half, Cleveland State found their groove and grabbed the momentum they were searching for. At the 70:40 mark, just moments after a saved shot from Jake Lagania, Dan Koniarczyk beat the Pitt goalkeeper from the top of the box for his second goal of the year and the 1-0 lead. The Vikings have won each game he has scored a point in this season.

While the Panthers had chances down the stretch, the CSU defense of Sergio Manesio, Mustafa Raychouni, James Milli and Kareem Banton remained strong and helped the Vikings grab their second shutout of the season.

Lagania totaled four shots in the win while Koniarczyk and Hesham Hammouda each added one, giving the Vikings six for the game.

Drobac made five total saves for the Vikings, improving his record in goal to 3-2-1. It was his first-career clean sheet.

CSU will host Belmont on Saturday (Oct. 17) for their final home night game of the season. The Vikings will then head to Columbus next Wednesday (Oct. 21) for their last non-conference match of the year with Ohio State.
