Vikings Draw Even With Detroit, 1-1

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's soccer team earned its first Horizon League point of the season on Saturday night, finishing in a 1-1 draw with Detroit.

The Vikings move to 3-5-1 overall, 0-2-1 in the Horizon League while the Titans tie for the sixth time this season, moving to 3-2-6, 0-0-3.

In a scoreless first half, both teams saw brief chances before the break. The Vikings would take momentum into the second half, though, as they lead in all categories; shots 6-3, shots on goal 4-2 and corner kicks 3-0.

The second half remained scoreless until Jake Lagania opened the scoring at the 62:59 mark with his team-leading third goal of the season. After Kevin Blackwood found an opening and banked a shot off the right post, Lagania followed through off the rebound and finished for the 1-0 lead.

Though the Vikings controlled the possession battle, the Titans were able to grab a score of their own on a video game-like bicycle kick goal by Tyler Hughes in the 73rd minute, tying the game at 1-1 on an assist from Jacob Prud'Homme.

Through overtime, CSU found itself able to rattle off four shots compared to Detroit's zero, though none fell through and the teams found themselves still knotted at the final whistle.

Sergio Manesio, Hesham Hammouda, Dan Koniarczyk, Gianluca DiFranco and Antonio Burgoa each had a shot on goal while Lagania finished with two. Aleksandar Drobac started for the third consecutive game in goal, making three saves and moving his record to an even 1-1-1.

The Vikings out-shot Detroit 14-7 overall and 7-4 in shots on goal.

Cleveland State will have a short break before they welcome Northern Kentucky to Krenzler Field on Wednesday (Oct. 7) for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff in what will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Vikings will then head on the road for two straight, at Oakland next Saturday (Oct. 10) and a non-conference matchup at Pittsburgh Oct. 13.
