Vikings Fall 4-1 In Season Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's soccer team dropped their season opener on Sunday night, 4-1 to Robert Morris.

CSU controlled much of the possession battle in the first half, outshooting Robert Morris 5-2 and leading corner kicks 2-0 at the break. It was Robert Morris, however, that struck first as Neco Brett capitalized on a penalty kick in the 21st minute after CSU goalkeeper Nick Ciraldo was called for a foul near the top of the box.

Robert Morris opened the second half fast and never looked back as they had three shots in the opening 10 minutes and Brett scored his second goal of the game on a cross from Jared Latchford in the 55th minute. Brett's third goal of the game came in the 73rd minute as he headed a cross from Lucas Puntillo into the back of the net.

The Vikings would not go quiet, though, as CSU's Sergio Manesio was able to pick up where he left off last season. Manesio notched his first goal of 2015 on a penalty kick in the 80th minute.

CSU pressed forward toward the end, but an open-field steal and finish for Brett in the final minute finished the scoring at 4-1.

Despite the outcome, Cleveland State led shots taken, 10-7, and corner kicks 10-1.

The Vikings head on the road for four straight non-conference games, the first this Wednesday (Sept. 2) at Dayton at 7:00 p.m.
