Men's Soccer Hosts Valparaiso in the First Round of the HL Tournament

• The Cleveland State men's soccer team begins the 2014 Horizon League Championship, hosting Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 10) in a first round game.

• The Vikings finished 6-11 this year and 4-4 in Horizon League play.

• Valparaiso finished with a record of 8-5-5 and 3-3-2 in league play.

• CSU played one game last week, dropping a 2-1 contest against Green Bay on Friday (Nov 7.).

Nick Ciraldo started in net and made five saves. 

Green Bay took a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal from Sidney McClain on a shot in the box to beat the goalie in the 23rd minute with an assist from Tyler Swanner. 

Green Bay struck again just two minutes later to add to their lead, 2-0 on a second goal from Sidney McClain and assists from Audi Jepson and Jeremy Nji. 

The Vikings fought back with a goal in the 33rd minute on a goal from Sergio Manesio to cut the deficit, 2-1, but was not enough to beat the Phoenix.

Mike Derezic tallied the assist on Manesio's goal.

Sergio Manesio leads the team with eight points while Alec Nagucki and Mike Derezic are just behind with seven points. Alvaro Pichardo and Mike Matlock are next with five points.

Nick Ciraldo has played in 16 games and made 60 saves throughout this season. 

• The Vikings played just six home matches this year with 11 contests on the road. CSU played eight straight matches away from home from Aug. 31 through Oct. 4.

• CSU played four games this year against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championship last season (Akron, California, Milwaukee, Wake Forest).

• The winner of Monday's match will advance to a league semifinal contest on Thursday (Nov. 13) against an opponent to be determined. The match will be played at Oakland.
