Men's Soccer Drops First League Match, 1-0, to Oakland

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Playing at home for just the third time this year and the first time in Horizon League play, the Cleveland State men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to Oakland on Saturday night at Krenzler Field.

CSU fell to 4-7 and 2-1 in the Horizon League, while the Golden Grizzlies improved to 4-5-1 and maintained their hold on first place in the league with a 3-0-1 mark.

In an evenly matched contest on a cool, crisp fall evening, the Golden Grizzlies were the beneficiary of an own goal in the 53rd minute that proved to be the only tally of the match.

CSU turned the ball over in their own third of the field and Oakland would capitalize with a corner kick. Matt Dudley sent the corner kick into the box and after it skipped off the turf, the ball bounced off a Viking defender into the back of the net.

It proved to be the only goal of the match, but both teams had several quality chances.

Sergio Manesio had the best chance for the Vikings with five minutes left in the first half. After gaining control of the ball on the left side of the box, Manesio unleashed a left footed volley that hit the far post.

Oakland outshot CSU, 11-9, while CSU held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Nick Ciraldo made three saves for the Vikings, including two at point blank range. Wes Mike made one save for Oakland to earn the shutout win.

CSU continues Horizon League action on Wednesday (Oct. 15) when the Vikings go back on the road at Wright State at 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
