Cleveland State Lacrosse Clinches First Postseason Spot After Defeating Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. – Cleveland State (8-7, 5-4) defeated Detroit (3-10, 3-6) 13-8 in the 2024 regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Vikings secured their first-ever postseason spot in the ASUN tournament. The Green and White also tied a program best for wins, which was set in 2019.

The Vikings struck first as Dylan Tomarchio found the back of the net off a feed from Alex Van Voorhis with 13:47 showing. Detroit responded with two straight goals to go in front 2-1 with 11:13 left in the opening quarter.

Wyatt Robertson evened the score off an assist from Parker Yearego at the 10:05 mark. After Detroit retied the game, Gavin Held scored back-to-back goals to put the Vikings ahead 4-3 with 5:45 to go in the quarter. The Titans tied the game with 3:51 left, but a Tomarchio goal with 15 seconds left gave Cleveland State a 5-4 advantage heading into the second.

Held completed the hat-trick on his second man-up goal off a pass from Van Voorhis to lead 6-4 just 26 seconds into the quarter. Two minutes later, Detroit found the back of the net to pull within a goal.

The Green and White got goals from Connor Zwagerman and Van Voorhis to extend the margin to 8-5 with 5:19 remaining in the half. The Titans got a goal back with 2:02 remaining, but a Van Voorhis goal just before the shot clock sounded with nine seconds left gave Cleveland State a 9-6 lead at halftime.

Detroit scored the lone goal before the 6:15 media timeout of the third quarter to trail 9-7. Van Voorhis became the second Viking with a hat-trick, scoring off a pass from Yearego to lead 10-7 with 4:01 to go in the quarter.

Amiri Austin pushed the lead to four with 1:55 left in the quarter, but the Titans got a goal back to trail 11-8 with one period left in regulation.

The Green and White shutout the Titans in the fourth, with Held scoring his fourth of the game and Tomarchio completing the hat-trick to win 13-8.

Van Voorhis finished with a game-best six points on three goals and three assists. Held was close behind with five points on four goals and an assist.

Drew Graves scooped up three ground balls while the Vikings forced nine turnovers in the game. Connor Kernan picked up the win after making 13 saves.

Cleveland State will now prepare for the 2024 ASUN tournament which will be held at Air Force from April 30 through May 5, with first-round games on Tuesday, semifinals on Friday, and the championship game on Sunday.
