CLEVELAND, Ohio - Alex Andrews (Gates Mills, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), a two time medalist at the state tournament and three-time first team All-Ohio selection, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Cleveland State and play golf beginning in the fall of 2011.

"I am very excited to be able to sign a player with the talent and ability that Alex displays," head coach Steve Weir said. "The addition of Alex to our program is another big step for our program because he is the top local player who is recognized as being one of the top players in Ohio. Our goal is to be able to attract the top local talent and we have been able to do that with our last two classes.

"Alex is a very skilled player who has been playing at a high level for many years. He has unlimited potential and will come in and help our program right away as he has not only enjoyed success as an individual, but he also knows how to win team tournaments. I expect Alex to be a fixture in our lineup for years to come."

Andrews, the No. 1 ranked junior golfer in Ohio by Ohiogolf.com, recently capped a brilliant high school career, winning his second straight Division III championship with rounds of 72-73 (145) at the Northstar G.C. and helping Gilmour to the state championship. Andrews was also the medalist at the 2009 state tournament with rounds of 72-72 (144) at the Ohio State Scarlet Course, winning by seven shots.

He tied the Division III state tournament record for the lowest individual score both years. In addition, Andrews is one of just 15 players in the 84 year history of the Ohio High School Athletic Association to win multiple state titles, joining the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Ben Curtis.

Andrews, who was also the medalist at the sectional tournament twice and the district tournament once, placed fourth at the state tournament as a sophomore.

In addition to a successful high school career, Andrews has enjoyed success in junior tournaments and participated in the 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. He was also the medalist 10 times on the North Coast Junior Tour, winning the Joe Haase Cup Match Play Championship at Firestone C.C. in 2009 and 2010.
