Former Viking Monas Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Former Cleveland State men's golfer Kent Monas has qualified to play in the 112th U.S. Amateur after finishing third at the qualifying tournament on Monday at Manakiki and Kirtland C.C.

The U.S. Amateur will be played at Cherry Hills C.C. in Denver, Colo., from Aug. 13-19.

Monas shot rounds of 71-70 (141) to finish third in the 86 player field. The top four finishers advanced to the U.S. Amateur.

Joey Garber earned medalist honors at 139 (69-70), while Tristan Lewis was the runner-up (68-72 - 140). Kyle Kmiecik earned the final spot in a playoff after a 36 hole total of 143 (72-71).

A four-year letterwinner at CSU (2008-11), Monas earned first team All-Horizon League honors in 2011 and was also the league Player of the Year. He earned Horizon League Newcomer of the Year in 2008.

Monas helped the Vikings to three Horizon League Championships (2008, 2009, 2011) and three berths to the NCAA regionals. Monas concluded his career with a 74.6 scoring average, ranking second all-time at CSU. His 74.1 scoring average as a senior ranks as the third best in program history.
