Vikings to Compete at NCAA Central Regional Championship

TEEING OFF: Cleveland State, seeded 13th, will compete in the 14-team NCAA Central Regional from Thursday through Saturday, May 14-16 at the par-72, 7,400-yard Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky. Western Kentucky will serve as the host school. This marks the second consecutive season the Vikings will compete at the regional championship after placing 23rd at the Central Regional last season. CSU qualified for the regionals by winning the Horizon League Championship for the second straight season.

LAST TIME OUT: For the second straight year the Vikings claimed the Horizon League Championship (April 27-28), topping second place Detroit by five shots. Cleveland State came out hot, shooting rounds of 302-297 on the first day of competition putting them three shots behind Detroit heading into the final round. The Vikings carded a final round 288, moving past Detroit and Green Bay to win the league title for the second straight season. Senior Jake Scott led the Vikings with rounds of 71-70-71 (212) to earn medalist honors for the second straight year. In addition, Scott was named to the all-tournament team and the 2009 All-Horizon League first team for the second straight year. Second year head coach Steve Weir picked up Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jake Scott was named the 2009 Horizon League Player of the Year, becoming the first player in school history to earn top honors from the league. Scott managed seven top-10 finishes in the 13 events for the 2009 season. On top of these honors Scott was named to the 2009 all-tournament team and the all-league first team for the second straight year. Scott, who already owns the CSU career scoring average, improved his mark to 74.1 after claiming medalist honors at the league tournament.

MORE JAKE: When senior Jake Scott won the Horizon League individual title, it gave him a school-record four individual career wins. In addition, Scott's 72.9 scoring average this season is the second best in school history, trailing his school record mark of 72.7 last season.

BOXLEY BOUNDS INTO LINEUP: After playing in just one fall tournament, freshman James Boxley was a fixture in the spring, playing in five tournaments, including the Horizon League Championship. At the league tournament, Boxley opened with a 74, the second lowest round by a Viking. He came back with rounds of 77-78 in the final two rounds, tying for 15th place overall. He was CSU's third finisher.

MONAS WINS TOURNAMENT: Sophomore Kent Monas earned his first career collegiate victory when he won the 36-hole Wright State Invitational on April 5. Playing as an individual, Monas fired rounds of 71-68 (139) to win the title by three shots.

UP NEXT: The low five teams and the low individual from each of the six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships from May 26-30 at The Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio.
