May 4, 2001

The Cleveland State men's golf team closed out the spring season with a fourth-place finish at the 2001 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Golf Championship, held at Cog Hill Golf Club in Lemont, Illinois.

The Vikes, who sat in fourth after the first two rounds, remained idle in the standings on the second and final day, carding a third-round score of 314 and completing the championship with a 944. The Vikings led the field in par-3 scoring (3.42) and carded 26 birdies, leaving them only five strokes back of third-place Wright State.

Detroit shot a 307 in the third and final round to hold off a resurgent UW-Green Bay team and finish with a first-place score of 929. MCC Golfer of the Year Shaun Rezachek (81-70-74--225) led Green Bay to its second-place finish by winning the event by one stroke over Jesse Hutchins of Wright State.

Senior Craig Hicks (Tecumseh, Ont./Belle River), who earlier in the week had been selected All-MCC, topped the CSU finishers with a fifth place score of 78-78-76--232. Sophomore Christian Komsa (Tecumseh, Ont./E.J. Brennan) carded a tournament-best eight birdies to finish three strokes behind Hicks and in a tie for seventh (78-79-78--235). Freshman Mike Bognar (Seven Hills, Oh./Normandy) and sophomore P.J. Myers (Westlake, Oh./St. Ignatius) both finished within five strokes of Komsa. Bognar completed his three rounds in a tie for tenth with a 79-80-78--237, and Myers finished 16th with a score of 78-80-82--240.

The 2001 MCC Golf Championship concluded CSU's spring season, during which the team played 15 rounds of golf and averaged 318.1 per round. Individually, the golfers averaged a 79.5 in 60 total rounds, with Hicks carding a spring low-round of 73 at the Citadel Invitational on March 13th. Hicks also led the team in scoring, carding 1161 strokes in 15 rounds for an average of 77.4.

A total of nine CSU golfers saw tournament action this spring, including four (Hicks, Komsa, Myers, and Bognar) who played in all six invitationals. In addition, three golfers saw tournament play for the first time with the CSU squad, including freshman Steve Smith (Brecksville, Oh./Brecksville-Broadview Heights), sophomore Brian Ruane (Westlake, Oh./Westlake), and senior John Hudson (Seven Hills, Oh./Parma).
