Men's Golf: Preparing for the Spring Season

March 11, 2009

Well, it's time for us to gear up for our spring season, and from what I've seen from our guys over the winter months, we have a promising season ahead of us. It's always tough to keep our skills sharp over the winter months, because of the nature of our sport, but we've been doing everything we can to make sure that we'll be as ready as possible when it comes time to start playing again.

We've already played one tournament this season, a few weeks ago in Hilton Head. The course was Wexford Plantation, a great (and difficult) layout that was a good challenge for a team that had only played 36 holes outside since October.

It was obvious, however, that our heavy athletic training and practice schedule over the winter had paid off, as we fought hard for a 7th place finish out of 16 good teams. Pat had his first top 10 finish, and played some great golf in tough conditions. I was really impressed with our team effort as a whole, though. I didn't see a single shot wasted because of frustration, and everyone fought hard for all 54 holes.

Next week we fly to Arizona to play the Desert Shootout, against what I hear is one of the strongest fields we have ever played against. We've got 72 holes to practice and scrape off the rust, and then we play three 18 hole days for the tournament itself. It's pretty exciting stuff, and in my entire time playing for CSU I've never seen a team more dedicated or hungry for a win out there. Keep an eye out for us.
