Four Viking golfers finished in the top 20 as the Cleveland State men's golf team won Eastern Illinois' Ironhorse Intercollegiate, shooting a combined 295-294-291---880. The team finished with a five-stroke edge over runner-up Butler at the Ironhorse Golf Course in Tuscola, Ill.
The win marks CSU's first team medallist honor since earning the top spot at the Ohio Collegiate Classic on April 16-17, 2000.
Senior Christian Komsa (Tecumseh, Ontario/E.J. Brennan) led the Viking attack, scoring a 71-74-72---217 to tie for fourth and finishing a mere two strokes out of the top spot. Sophomore Billy Houle (Joliette, Quebec/Georges Vanier) placed seventh overall with a 75-70-74---219, while junior Mike Bognar (Seven Hills, Ohio/Normandy) shot a 73-75-74---222 for eighth place. Senior P.J. Myers (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) charged back from 61st place after day one to finish tied for 16th, scoring an 80-75-71---226.
Nathan Colson of Marquette University held off competitors from Bradley and Tennessee State, tallying a 70-73-72---215 to earn individual medallist honors by one stroke.
The men's golfers will conclude the fall portion of the 2002-2003 season on October 21-22 at the Pirate Fall Invitational at East Carolina.
