INDIANAPOLIS - Led by sophomore Ben Grandy's (Southgate, Mich./Gabriel Richard) runner-up finish, Cleveland State moved up two notches to claim third place at the Butler Fall Invitational. The Vikings posted a 54-hole total of 881, to finish behind only Oakland (870) and IUPUI (877) in the 14-team field at the 6,817-yard, par 71 Sycamore Course at Eagle Creek GC.

Grandy shot rounds of 71, 70 and 73 to wind up in a four-way tie for second place -- his highest finish ever in a collegiate event. Fellow sophomore Mike Rutgers (Kingsville, Ontario/Cardinal Carter) carded the team's best score of the day (71) on his way to finishing tied for 12th (219), while freshman Doug Barber (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) was just two shots back in a tie for 15th.

Oakland's Jonathan Pauli shot a 68 on Tuesday to claim medalist honors with a two-under par 211.

"This team is really growing up quickly -- they improved every round and really finished strong today," CSU head coach Tom Porten said. "Our two sophomores [Grandy and Rutgers] are going to be our horses this year and are both going to continue to get stronger as the season progresses."

Cleveland State is in action again when the Vikings travel to the DePaul Blue Demon Invitational on Sept. 27-28.
