VERONA, N.Y. - The Cleveland State men's golf team opened the 2009 fall season by playing the first 36 holes at the 54-hole Turning Stone Invitational at the Turning Stone Resort (Kaluhyat Course). The University of Missouri is serving as the host school for the event.
The Vikings carded rounds of 316 and 313 today and are in ninth place out of 13 teams after the first two rounds..
"We definately did not play like we are capable of playing," head coach Steve Weir said. "I'm not sure if we had some early season jitters, but we need to find a way to execute on the course and play our games."
Senior Kyle Cobb carded rounds of 74-75 (149) to lead the Vikings and is tied for seventh place overall, while junior Kent Monas was at 152 (75-77), tied for 13th place.
The Vikings were dealt some adversity early on as senior Patrick Elber had to withdraw from the tournament after injuring his wrist while hitting out of the fescue on the ninth hole.
"Playing with only four players puts a lot more pressure on everyone to step up their games," Weir said. "There isn't that safety valve so we need to focus on every shot tomorrow."
CSU will conclude play in the event with the final 18 holes on Monday (Sept. 7).
