BACK TO BACK!! Vikings Win Men's Golf Title as Scott Repeats as Medalist

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A total team effort helped Cleveland State shoot an even-par 288 in the final round of the Horizon League Championship, helping the Vikings win their second straight league title on Tuesday at the par-72, 7,031-yard Kearney Hills G.C.

Senior Jake Scott shot a final round 71 to claim medalist honors for the second straight season, finishing at four-under-par 212 (71-70-71).

Scott's performance helped him become the first player in school history to earn Horizon League Player of the Year honors and he also garnered a spot on the all-tournament team for the third consecutive year.

"The last two days have been a great experience and we can't wait to get back to Cleveland and celebrate with everyone," head coach Steve Weir said. "Every player on the team from one through five contributed to this over the last two days and we would not have been able to win the title without the efforts of each and every player.

"When we got to the course today, I saw the attitudes of each player and felt very comfortable. The mindset was completely different than yesterday and nobody wanted to see our season end here today."

After opening with rounds of 302 and 297, the Vikings began today's final round three shots behind Detroit and tied with Green Bay for second place.

"We talked about getting off to a good start today and that was going to be key," Weir said. "Everybody was ready to play today and we didn't make many mistakes."

For the second straight year, Scott was the only player to break par at the league championship, besting Wright State's Charlie Doll, who was five shots back at 217.

"It was great to see Jake earn medalist honors again this year," Weir said. "I am proud of the way he has grown and matured as a player and he was just so steady over the last two days."

Sophomore Kent Monas shot an even-par 72 today to finish in eighth place at 223 (79-72-72), while juniors Kyle Cobb and Patrick Elber shot 72 and 73, respectively.

"Kyle and Pat did a phenomenal job of bouncing back today," Weir said. "If they don't get off to the start that they did today, we may not have won the tournament. It was great to see them play like they did today."

Cobb tied for 18th with a 230 total, while Elber tied for 22nd at 232. Freshman James Boxley tied for 15th (229).

Weir earned Horizon League Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.

By virtue of the title, Cleveland State automatically receives a a berth in one of the six upcoming NCAA Men's Golf Regionals, which will be held from May 14-16, 2009 in either Bowling Green, Ky., Stillwater, Okla., Galloway, N.J., Austin, Texas, Dale City, Calif. and Sorrento, Fla.,
