HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Cleveland State freshman Andrew Bailey was the only player to break par in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship on Friday at the par-72, 6,933-yard Mission Inn Resort, helping the Vikings lead after the first round at 308.

Bailey, who was CSU's second golfer out today, used an eagle three on the opening hole and two birdies to card a 71, his team leading eighth round of par or better this year.

He holed his third shot on the opening hole from about 85 yards out for the eagle.

"As a team, we didn't play our best, but it is nice to be in the lead," head coach Steve Weir said. However, there is still a lot of golf to be played over the next two days and this thing is far from over. We are only seven shots ahead of the two teams tied for sixth place and just 12 shots ahead of the eighth place team. A lot can happen over the next two days and we are going to have to come out focused mentally and ready to play our games."

A trio of players, including CSU sophomore Michael Klaric, are four shots back at 75. Klaric began his day with a double-bogey seven on the opening hole, but rallied with four birdies, including three on the back nine where he came in with a two-under 35 on the final nine.

Senior Kent Monas shot an 80, while senior Pat Elber (82) and senior Drew Davidson (83) rounded out the Vikings lineup.

Green Bay is in second place, four shots behind CSU at 312, while Valparaiso and Wright State are tied for third at 313. Detroit is in fifth (315), while Loyola and Youngstown State are tied for sixth at 315 and Butler is in eighth at 320.

The second round of the league championship will be played on Saturday. CSU will tee off in the second wave of teams, beginning at 8:20 a.m.
