Men's Golfers Finish Eighth At CER/CSU Invitational

April 19, 2001

The Cleveland State Men's Golf Team hosted the Seventh Annual Cleveland Energy Resources/Cleveland State Collegiate Invitational over the weekend, which was held at the Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. Dornoch became a first-time host to the Invitational this year and the fifth host course since the tournament debuted at Mayfield Country Club in 1995. The linksters put together three respectable rounds at the par-72 course to post a team score of 323-316-324---963 and an eighth-place finish overall.

Sophomore Christian Komsa (Tecumseh, Ont./E.J. Brennan) struggled on the first day of the tournament, posting a first round score of 83. However, in the final two rounds, he shot exceptionally well, carding scores of 76 and 74 for a team-best 233 and to finish in a tie for 11th overall. Senior Craig Hicks (Tecumseh, Ont./Belle River) followed Komsa, finishing only two strokes back with a score of 235 and tied for 16th. Freshman Mike Bognar (Seven Hills, Oh./Normandy) finished in a tie for 41st overall, totaling a score of 247, and sophomore P.J. Myers (Westlake, Oh./St. Ignatius) placed just a stroke behind Bognar at 248 (T-45th). Sophomore Brian Ruane (Westlake, Oh./Westlake) played in his first tournament with the CSU Golfers and finished 59th with a 265.

Three other Cleveland State golfers participated in the tournament as individuals. Freshman Steve Smith (Brecksville, Oh./Becksville-Broadview Heights) saw the first tournament action of his CSU career and made the most of it by shooting a 238, placing him in a tie for 20th overall. Sophomore Jim Schaefer (Independence, Oh./Brunswick) carded a 248 (T-45th), and sophomore Jeff Sutyak (Eastlake, Oh./Eastlake North) shot a 264 (58th).

The golfers from Oakland University posted outstanding rounds of 309, 298, and 315 (922) to win the Invitational by eight strokes over second-place Detroit. The Grizzlies were led by first-place finisher Gary Robinson, who shot rounds of 73, 74, and 73 for his four-over-par score of 220.

The golfers conclude their regular season April 22-24, when they travel to Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Iowa to participate in the Drake Relays/Jack A Wallace Classic. That will be their last tune-up before heading to Chicago to vie for the MCC Championship April 29-May 1 at Cog Hill Golf Club.
