HIGHLAND, Mich. - The Cleveland State men's golf team began its final tuneup before next weekend's Horizon League Championship by competing in the first two rounds of the Detroit Titan Invitational on Friday at the par-72, 7,142-yard Prestwick Village G.C.

The Vikings opened the day with a round of 300 and followed that with a 308 in round two and are in seventh place out of 14 teams.

"I thought we played a decent first round, but struggled a bit in the second round," assistant coach Nate Miklos said. "The players hung in there and battled despite some strong winds, but I'm guessing we are going to see a tougher course tomorrow and maybe ever worse weather so we'll have to stay mentally strong and play our games."

Senior Kyle Cobb leads the Vikings at 148 after rounds of 75 and 73, which ties him for ninth place overall.

Freshman Michael Klaric opened with a 71, his first career round under par, and shot a 79 in the second round for a two round total of 150 and is tied for 14th place. James Boxley is at 154 after rounds of 78-76 with his second round featuring many ups and downs.

"James was six-over par early on, but rallied to get back to even with four birdies and an eagle," Miklos said. "He kind of struggled coming in, but it was good to see him not lose focus after that start."

The Vikings will conclude the tournament with the final 18 holes on Saturday. A shotgun start is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
