Vikings in Third Place After Opening Round of Butler Spring Invitational

AVON, Ind. - Cleveland State shot an opening round 300 and is in third place out of 10 teams at the Butler Spring Invitational that began on Monday at the par-72, 6,960-yard Preswick C.C.

CSU is just one shot behind second place Butler (299) and 11 shots back of first round leader Dayton (289).

"We left a few shots out there today, but I think we are still within striking distance heading into tomorrow's final round," head coach Steve Weir said.

CSU is three shots ahead of fourth place Valparaiso and IUPUI, five shots ahead of sixth place Loyola and seven shots clear of seventh place Detroit in the tightly bunched standings.

Michael Klaric shot CSU's low round of the day, carding a 73, which ties him for fourth place in the medalist race.

Andrew Bailey is tied for 11th place after a 74, while Jon Riemer is tied for 14th following a 75. Michael Balcar and Brendan Byrne both shot 78 and are tied for 31st.

Dayton's Sean Keeting fired a 66 and leads by five after the first round.

The final round of the event will be played on Tuesday.
