March 12, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Cleveland State men's and women's golf teams headed south on Monday to open their spring schedules at the Butler North/South Invitational. The men are in fourth out of 10 teams at the conclusion of 18 holes, while the women stand 13th out of 18 squads. The tournament is being held at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.

"Both teams struggled down the stretch, but overall I'm pleased with how we played today," CSU head coach Brian Varsey said. "We've still got some rust to shake off, but we're in a position to move up tomorrow."

Flager leads the men's competition at 281 (-7), easily out-distancing Bethune-Cookman (295) and Gonzaga (297). CSU is tied with IPFW at 300.

Flager's Eric Downs fired an opening round 69 to lead the individual race. Doug Barber paced the Vikings with a 74, while Ben Grandy and Jake Scott both carded 75s.

On the women's side, Eastern Illinois and Wofford are tied for the lead at 312 (+24) - just a shot ahead of Wofford and Jacksonville. CSU came in a 332.

Wofford's Erin Wells leads the race for medalist at 71. Mallory Wyderka led the Vikings with an 80, while Amanda Glatfelter posted an 81.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
