Vikings Top DePaul After Falling to Connecticut at The Match Play

TAMPA, Fla. - The Cleveland State men's golf team went 1-1 on the opening day of The Match Play on Friday at the TPC of Tampa. The Vikings fell to Connecticut, 3.5-1.5, in the opening round and defeated DePaul, 3-2, in the consolation first round.

"We got ahead early against Connecticut, but just couldn't hold on in enough matches to pick up the win," head coach Steve Weir said. "But I was really happy with the way we came back against DePaul to win that match. I feel that we are so far ahead of where we were as a team last spring and I continue to see progress out of this team."

In the 16-team match play format, five individual golfers will play for each team in a head-to-head matchup. If an individual wins the match against the opponent, he earns one point for his team. If he ties the match, then it is a half-point for each team. The team to earn three points wins the match and moves on.

Michael Klaric earned CSU's lone point with a 3&1 victory at the No. 1 spot, while Andrew Bailey halved his match at No. 3 to garner a half point for the Vikings in the morning session.

All five matches between CSU and DePaul ended at 3&2 with Kent Monas (No. 2), Andrew Davidson (No. 4) and Jon Riemer (No. 5) winning for the Vikings.

"It was nice because all five golfers were able to get a win today and contribute to our success," Weir said.

The semifinals and finals, as well as the final two rounds of the consolation rounds will be played on Saturday (Feb. 12).
