ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Cleveland State men's golf team shot a first round 312 and is in 13th place at the 2016 NCAA Regional which is being played at the par-72, 7,562-yard UNM Championship Course.

The Vikings are playing in the regionals for the seventh time in the last 11 years after winning the Horizon League Championship in late April.

"I thought we did a good job of handling the nerves at the start and took advantage of some holes early," head coach Steve Weir said. "But we didn't handle the difficult holes well, which is not like us. We normally don't make enough birdies on the easy holes, but play the tough holes well. We'll regroup tonight and get ready for round two tomorrow."

CSU got off to a hot start, playing the opening par-5 hole in four-under-par, helping the Vikings climb to the top of the leaderboard early in the round.

Junior Patrick Luth opened the tournament with an eagle-birdie start to get to three-under-par before finishing with a 77, tying him for 53rd place.

Sophomore Joey Krecic, a first team All-Horizon League selection, posted CSU's top score in the first round with a 76 that included a pair of birdies. Sophomore Blake Prince is tied for 63rd place after a 79, while senior Mitchell Moore shot 80 and is tied for 66th.

Moore is playing in his third straight NCAA regional.

Junior Paul Minko opened with an 82 and is tied for 69th place.

Arizona State holds the lead after the first round, firing a two-under-par 286. South Florida is second at 289 and is followed by Texas Tech and USC who are tied for third at 291 and TCU in fifth at 292.

San Diego State is in sixth at 293 and is followed by New Mexico (294), Texas A&M (296), Liberty (297), Iowa (302), Army (303), NC State (305), CSU (312) and Wagner (316).

The second round of the NCAA regionals will be played on Tuesday with CSU teeing off in the final grouping. Minko will be the first Viking off the 10th tee at 11:50 am ET with Moore following 12 minutes later. Price will tee off at 12:12 pm ET with Luth at 12:23 pm ET and Krecic in the final grouping of the day at 12:34 pm ET.
