Vikings in Second Place After First Day of Horizon League Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Cleveland State opened the 2016 Horizon League Championship with a first round 295 and is in second place. The championship began on Friday at the par-72, 6,816-yard Mission Inn Resort.

The Vikings, who have won the last two League titles, are just four shots behind first round leader Oakland which shot 291 today. Wright State is in third place at 307 and is followed by Youngstown State (308), Valparaiso and Northern Kentucky (309), Detroit (313) and Green Bay (320).

Joey Krecic, who was named to the All-Horizon League first team yesterday, is in third place after a one-under-par 71. He made one birdie and one bogey on the front nine to shoot an even-par 35 and made four birdies and three bogeys on the inward nine for a one-under-par 36.

Krecic's five birdies today were tied for the most by a player.

Paul Minko made four birdies today en route to a 73 and is tied for sixth place. He shot one-under on the back nine today. Patrick Luth is tied for ninth place overall after an opening round 74, which included an even-par 35 on the outward nine.

Blake Prince is tied for 17th place after a 77, while Mitchell Moore shot 83 and is tied for 34th.

Luth and Prince both made 13 pars today, tied for the second most by any player in the field.

The second round of the League championship will be played on Saturday (April 23) with the first tee time at 7:30 am. The Vikings will be in the final group with Oakland and Wright State.
