Minko Shoots Final Round 68; CSU Finishes 13th at Regionals

BREMERTON, Wash. - Paul Minko shot a final round four-under-par 68 and Cleveland State finished 13th at the NCAA Regionals that concluded on Saturday at the par-72, 7,168-yard Gold Mountain G.C.

Minko's 68 was the lowest round by a CSU player in NCAA Regionals, one shot better than the 69's shot by Andrew Bailey last year and Pat Luth during yesterday's second round.

The Vikings, who were playing in the regionals for the sixth time in the last 10 seasons, shot a final round 295.

Minko, who fired an even-par 72 in Friday's second round, opened today's final round with four straight pars before making three birdies over his final five holes on the outward nine en route to a three-under-par 33. After a bogey on his 10th hole, Minko birdied his 11th hole, the par-4 second, and made a birdie on his final hole of the day, the 617-yard, par-five, ninth hole, to card a one-under-par 35 on the inward nine.

Minko was CSU's top finisher, tying for 39th place with a 54-hole total of 221 (81-72-68).

Luth shot a final round 76 and tied for 52nd place at 223 (78-69-76), while Michael Balcar finished 61st with rounds of 76-75-74 (225). It was Balcar's final tournament at a Viking and he concludes his career as a three-time first team All-Horizon League honoree.

Joey Krecic finished 68th at 228 (74-77-77), while Mitchell Moore was 71st at 233 (77-75-81).

UAB won the regional with a 21-under-par (843) total to advance to the NCAA Championship. South Carolina was second at 19-under par (845), while USC was third at 847 (17-under) and Washington and TCU tied for fourth place at 854 (10-under).

Those five teams advance to the NCAA Championships from May 29-June 3 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., as well as Kyle Mueller of Michigan who tied for second place overall and was the low individual from a team not advacning to nationals.

Baylor finished in sixth place at 862 and was followed by Michigan (863), Iowa State (869), VCU and UC-Davis (870), Pepperdine (880), Sam Houston State (883), Cleveland State (891) and South Dakota (898).
