Defending Champion CSU Ready for League Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State will set out to defend the Horizon League Championship when the Vikings compete at the 2015 league championship from Friday through Sunday (April 24-26) at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

CSU, which has won five of the last nine league titles, carded a three-day total of 892 last season to win the title by three shots over Detroit. Youngstown State was third at 911 and was followed by Valparaiso (915), Wright State (940), Green Bay (945) and Oakland (969).

The Vikings had three players earn spots on the all-tournament team, including Andrew Bailey who claimed medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 218. Bailey was a three-time Horizon League Player of the Year.

Michael Balcar tied for fifth place at last year's league championship (71-73-80 - 224), while Brendan Byrne tied for seventh place (79-73-73 - 225) to also earn spots on the all-tournament team.

From that trio, only Balcar, a senior, is back this year, but CSU also returns sophomore Pat Luth and junior Mitchell Moore who played key roles at last year's league championship.

Junior Paul Minko and freshman Joey Krecic round out CSU's lineup this weekend.

Balcar is tops on this year's team with a 72.8 scoring average and has a fifth place and 11th place showing in his last two tournaments. Balcar has five top-20 finishes in his seven events this year and leads the team with nine rounds of par or better out of his 18 rounds.

Balcar's 74.7 career scoring average in fourth all-time in CSU history.

Luth and Krecic are tied for second on the squad with a 75.2 scoring average.

Luth, who carded CSU's low round in the final day of last year's league championship with a 74, has played in all 10 events this year. He leads the team with a pair of top-five finishes and is second with three rounds of par or better.

Krecic has enjoyed a strong first season at CSU, playing in all 10 events with two top-10 finishes and a low round of 69.

Moore started the year off hot, tying for second place at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate in the year's first event that included a second round 67. At the Marshall Invitational in September, Moore carded a first round 65, the second lowest round in school history. He has a 75.9 scoring average.

Minko, who shot a 66 at the St. Bonaventure Invitational in the fall, had a strong showing at last week's Rutherford Intercollegiate, playing as an individual. He shot 74-70-75 (219) to place ninth overall and is averaging 75.5 this year.

The winner of the league championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The selections will be announced live on the Golf Channel on Monday (May 4) at 10:00 a.m. on the Golf Channel.

The NCAA Regionals will be played from May 14-16 with the sites being in Noblesville, Ind., Chapel Hill, N.C., San Diego, Calif., Lubbock, Texas, Bremerton, Wash., and New Haven, Conn.
