Men's Golf Continues To Lead at League Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Cleveland State men's golf team shot a second round 293, the lowest round of the tournament so far, and extended its lead at the Horizon League Championship to six shots on Saturday.

CSU has posted a 36 hole total of 593 and will enter Sunday's final round with a six shot lead over Detroit (599), who posted a 296 in today's second round. Youngstown State is in third place at 605 and is followed by Valparaiso (609), Green Bay (628), Wright State (631) and Oakland (644).

The league championship is being played at the par-72, 6,776-yard Mission Inn Resort El Campeon Course.

Senior Andrew Bailey fired a two-under-par 70 and is the overall leader after two rounds with a 36 hole total of 142 (72-70). After a double-bogey on the seventh hole, Bailey made an eagle on the par-5, 10th hole and birdied the 17th hole, to post a three-under-par 34 on the back nine.

Balcar is two shots behind Bailey at 144, following yesterday's 71 with a 73 today. He made birdies on the 10th, 11th and 14th holes to match Bailey's 34 on the back nine.

Brendan Byrne shot a second round one-over-par 73 today and is tied for 11th place overall at 152 (79-73). He started today's round with back-to-back birdies.

Mitchell Moore is tied for 17th place at 155 (78-77), while Pat Luth is one shot back and tied for 19th place at 156 (79-77).

The final round of the league championship will be played on Sunday with the winner earning a bid to the NCAA Championship. CSU is going after its fifth league title in the last nine years, having won the Horizon League Championship in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011.
