BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's golf team holds the 36-hole lead after rounds of 296-291 (587) at the opening day of the John Piper Intercollegiate.

The tournament, hosted by Bowling Green, is being played at the par-72, 7,044-yard Stone Ridge G.C.

"It's a great feeling to be able to hold the 36 hole lead," head coach Steve Weir said. "I don't think we played our best today so that makes it ever more encouraging. I am excited to see how the guys come out tomorrow after sleeping on the lead. It will be a great experience for us."

The Vikings were tied for fourth place after their opening round 296, six shots behind first round leader Wright State (290). However, CSU posted a second round 291, tied for the lowest second round of the day with Oakland to shoot up the leaderboard.

"We posted a 291 and then watched as more scores were posted," Weir said. "We just kept creeping up the board until all the scores were in and we held the 36-hole lead."

CSU will enter Tuesday's final round with a three shot lead over Wright State (590) and a five shot advantage over Ashland (592). Oakland and Evansville are tied for fourth at 593 and are followed by Green Bay (595), Bowling Green (596), Valparaiso (598), Youngstown State (616) and Mount Union (623).

Senior Jon Riemer shot back-to-back rounds of 72 and is in fourth place at 144. Junior Andrew Bailey is tied for eighth place at 147 after rounds of 73-74.

Senior Michael Klaric rallied from a first round 79 to post a 71 in the second round and is tied for 17th place. Michael Balcar is tied for 26th at 152 (72-80) and Nick Paxos is tied for 44th at 155 (81-74).

BGSU's Wes Gates fired 66-69 (135) and holds a five shot lead over Wright State's Cody Nickson (69-71 - 140) in the individual race.

The final round will be played on Tuesday morning.
