Josh McCoy Is Third Men's Basketball Signee

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Josh McCoy, a two-time first team all-state selection in Missouri, has signed a national letter of intent to attend CSU and play basketball starting in the fall of 2008. CSU head coach Gary Waters made the announcement on Wednesday (April 30).

McCoy is the third player to sign with Cleveland State this year, joining Jeremy Montgomery (Chicago, IL/Lincoln Park) and Charlie Woods (Lansing, MI/East Lansing), each of whom signed on April 16. All three student-athletes will be freshman and have four seasons of eligibility.

"Josh has unbelievable potential and is a great addition to our program," CSU head coach Gary Water said. "He has great length for a guard with the ability to shoot from long range, defend both on and off the ball. He is tailor-made for our program."

McCoy, a 6-4, 190-pound guard from Fort Zumwalt South High in St. Peters, Mo., averaged 19.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.5 steals a game this past year to help his team to its second straight third place finish in the state tournament. He shot .456 from the field, .408 from three-point and .783 from the line to earn first team all-state honors from the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association for the second consecutive year.

Named to the Missouri All-Class Big Six as a senior, he finished his career scoring 1,579 points (15.4 ppg), grabbing 469 rebounds, handing out 276 assists and making 214 steals, shooting .453 from the field (502-1107), .398 from three-point (184-462) and .772 from the line (391-506) in 102 career games.

A four-year starter, McCoy averaged 17.9 points, 5.6 rebounds. 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals as a junior, making 59 of 143 three-point attempts (.412). He averaged 13.0 points as a sophomore.

McCoy collected a myriad of honors during his basketball career. He was also a three-time all-league choice, earning league player of the year honors as a senior and was twice named first team all-metro by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

A standout in football as well, he was the starting quarterback as a senior and was a first team all-league choice as a defensive back as a junior.

Cleveland State had a breakthrough season on the basketball court in 2007-08, going 21-13 and receiving a post-season bid for only the fourth time in school history (and first since 1987-88). The Vikings finished second in the Horizon League, winning a school-record 12 league contests, posting only the sixth 20-win season in school history and first since 1992-93.
