CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Frashon McGee, an honorable mention junior college All-America choice last season at Des Moines Area Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Cleveland State and play basketball beginning in the fall of 2004. Viking head coach Mike Garland made the announcement on Monday.

"Frashon will be a great addition to our interior lineup," Garland said. "He is a good fit in our system because he is a blue collar player who excels at doing all of the little things.

"He is tough to defend. His strength and athleticism makes him a good inside scorer and his shooting range allows him to take his game outside and be a legitimate three-point threat.

"The best thing I like about Frashon is that he is a team player who is used to winning," Garland added. "He came to campus for his visit and in just two days, he earned the respect of everybody on the team which is something that doesn't normally happen that quickly. He knows the sacrifices that it takes to be successful and he wants to make our program better."

A 6-6, 230-pound forward from Waterloo, Iowa, McGee was an honorable mention All-America choice by the National Junior College Athletic Association after averaging 14.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game as a sophomore. He was both a first team all-league and all-region choice, helping the team to a 27-6 record and the regional finals of the national tournament. He shot .515 from the field (190-369), .420 from three-point (47-112) and .661 from the line (37-56), adding 69 blocks, 68 steals and a 1.79 assist-to-turnover ratio (120 assists, 67 turnovers).

McGee played his freshman season at Indian Hills College in Ottumwa, Iowa, averaging 3.2 points and 2.8 rebounds a game in a reserve role, helping the team to a 25-7 mark.

McGee is the second Viking basketball signee, joining Mike Redell (Rockford, Mich.), who signed during the early signing period last fall.
